NRB Global Business Convention which started on Saturday 21st of October, ended at Abul Maal Abdul Muhit Sports Complex in Sylhet city on week 23rd -27th October 2017.
British-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry in association with Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) and supported by the Wales Chamber of Commerce, Sylhet, Press Club and non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) from 29 countries, including the United Kingdom, South
Africa, Australia, German, USA, Bahrain, Russia, Sweden, Canada, France, Spain, Italy, Dubai, Singapore, and Saudi Arabia, participated in the convention including distinguished NRBs.
Sylhet NRB convention ending of first three days’ celebration of the seven-day long convention over three thousand business men and community leaders from all over the world attended. Rest of the four days’ activities of the convention included visiting NRB owned factories and establishments, holding view-exchanging meetings with local City Chambers of Commerce and examining the potential of the investments in future.
The whole city was displayed with 29 countries flags and was decorated with lights and number of gates with “Welcome to the NRB City”, billboards slogan ‘NRB made Bangladesh proud’ and a seminar with subject on NRB’s contribution, capital investment, share market, IT and tourism. Musical performance was held at Abul Mal Abdul Muhit Sports Complex and a colourful rally was held to mark the end of the NRB Global Business Convention 2017, which started from Chamber Building in Jail Road and ended at Abul Mal Abdul Muhit Sports Complex. During the seven days convention which was supported by local Police, Rab, academics, artists, singers, media personality, corporate executives, local government and local businesses.
Media personality and Ion TV head of news Bulbul Hasan gave a short speech and presented a documentary in Britain media history. On his speech on three-day long convention, Finance and Planning Minister M A Mannan MP said that the NRBs are contributing hugely in every sector including socio, economic and education. The present government possesses an open mind towards the NRBs and hence passing laws benefitting the NRBs.
Other guests who took part in the discussion included Minister of Posts, Telecom and Information and Technology Mostofa Jabbar, Managing Director of Flora Limited Mostofa Shamsul Islam, Director Mrs Sufia Islam, Professor Dr Raqibul Anwar, Dr Hasan Yusuf, Hasan Iqbal and other speakers. One of the key messages from speakers was that the government should announced NRB National day and better utilise the knowledge and skills of non-resident NRBs in the country’s development, while the interests of NRBs should be protected, as they send remittances to boost the country’s economy.

The three days program was hosted by TV presenter Urmee Mazher.
After the Global NRB Convention 2017 in Sylhet there was a number of NRB day celebration, holding conferences and other events have been held in Bangladesh and other country including USA, UK, Australia, Italy, Spain and Middle East to highlight the powerful role that Non-Resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) can play in the country’s ongoing development.
Also “NRB Conclave” was held at Le Méridien in Dhaka on Saturday 30th Dec 2017, an initiative of Bangladesh Brand Forum. The meeting explored different models and approaches to better engage NRBs in contributing to the national economy of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Investment Development Authority Executive Chairman Kazi M Aminul Islam spoke at NRB Conclave. Governor and visiting Professor-in-Practice of London School of Economics Lutfey Siddiqi, Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority executive member additional secretary Mohammed Ayub, The British Curry Awards founder and iOn Television Europe chairman Enam Ali MBE, NRB Bank managing director and chief executive officer Md Mehmood Husain, Bangladesh Bank chief economist Faisal Ahmed, Bangladeshi policy makers, academics, artists, corporate executives and others were present. The event was attended by around 300 invited guests and it was the first time that the celebration day for NRB day was observed on 30th December 2017.

Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith enlightened the guests about the history of Bangladeshi people traveling abroad. In line with that, they also celebrated NRB day 30th December 2017. Many distinguished guests at the event which included Dr Nuran Nabi, Abul Kalam Azad, Enam Ali MBE and other NRBs have assured that from next year they will be celebrating official day to recognize the immense contribution of millions of our NRBs in various countries. Dr. A. K. Momen said that a proposal has been presented to the Prime Minister to celebrate 30th December as official “NRB Day” every year. Earlier this year, back in the UK, the BBCCI organised a dinner re ception in honour of the Sylhet City Corporation Mayor, Ariful Hoque Chowdhury, at the Arbor Hotel in East London. While the occasion was the chance to praise the work of the Mayor in developing Sylhetas a destination for digital industries, it was also an opportunity to celebrate the success of the NRB
Convention in Sylhet.
The BBCCI President Enam Ali MBE proposed that a NRB monument should be built in Sylhet and BBCCI director Ahmad us Samad Chowdhury proposed one of the roads in the Sylhet area renamed
as Brick Lane.
Mayor Ariful Hoque Choudhury accepted the idea of a NRB monument in the heart of Sylhet to recognise the contribution of first generation NRBs in Bangladesh and also to encourage later generations to visit and invest in Bangladesh.
